Helpful Tips for Middle School

How to effectively use a planner to organize your assignments:

  • • Fill in any permanent due dates. If your teacher gives you an assignment or major project, write the due date in your planner when it is assigned. Write your assignments down daily. As soon as your teacher gives the assignment, write it on your planner. If you don’t have any homework or assignments for a class, write none in that space so you make sure to keep track of everything.
  • • Set weekly goals and daily steps to reach them. Ask yourself:
  • -- What do I want to achieve this week?
  • -- How can I make this happen?
  • -- What are the baby-steps I can take to reach my goal?
  • • Fill these steps in on your planner so you remember to do them each day.
  • • Keep track of upcoming assignments
  • • Keep notes at the bottom of your planner for upcoming tests, quizzes, and assignments for the upcoming week
  • • Practice time management. For every task, ask yourself these questions:
  • -- When is the deadline for this?
  • -- What are the baby steps I can take to help me complete it on time?
  • -- How long should I spend on each step?
  • -- When will I take these steps?
  • • Cross out assignments as you complete them.

Time Management Tips for Homework: Create a Homework Plan

  • • Understand the assignment
  • • Write it in your planner, ask questions about what’s expected, ask how long the assignment should take (particularly is you have a lot of homework or other activities).
  • • Start right away – use study periods or other extra time during your school day to get started.
  • • Budget your time – create a homework schedule, especially if you’re involved with sports or activities after school
  • • Watch where you work – find a quiet place to focus and avoid studying on your bed. Limit your distractions by parking your electronic devices while you work.
  • • Tackle the hardest assignments first.
  • • Keep moving ahead – if you get stuck, try to figure it out but don’t spend too much time on the problem or question. Ask an adult, older sibling, or classmate for help.
  • • Take a 15-minute break every hour. Sitting for too long without stretching or relaxing makes you less productive.
  • • Get it ready to go – when you finish your homework, put it in your backpack so it’s ready to go the next day.

Middle School Experience

  • • Talk with your child about upcoming changes. Discuss switching classes, length of classes. Set up expectations by giving them as much information as possible.
  • • Set weekly goals and daily steps to reach them. Ask yourself:
  • • Get their class schedule and review it together. Create a version your child can easily access. Examples include putting essential information (class, room number, teacher, and period) on an index card, put it into the calendar app or notes app on their phone, print it on a piece of paper and put in the cover of a binder, or list in on their planner.
  • • Tour the building using the schedule. Take time to walk around. Find classrooms, cafeteria, gym, bathrooms, the nurse’s office, and guidance office.
  • • Organize materials according to their schedule. Color code subjects to make it easy to find materials. For example, use a blue notebook and blue folder for math and a green notebook and green folder for science.
